Seabrook Family Counseling / Who I Work With

The right fit matters
more than anything else.

I work best with specific kinds of people. Here's an honest picture of who I serve — and who I don't.

My client profile

“I like working with people who are highly intelligent, highly creative, and don't fit in the box well.”

The clients I work with best are usually the ones who came in already knowing something felt off — not just in their circumstances, but in the way previous therapy had felt. Robotic. Scripted. Like they were being managed, not met.

Specificity isn't about turning people away. It's about showing up with full presence for the clients where I can actually do my best work. If you're on this page, you're probably already asking the right question.

Who I work with
Primary — Best fit
  • Ages 16–35
  • High IQ / high EQ — often “a lot” or intense
  • Creatives, athletes, academics, young professionals
  • Previously tried therapy and found it hollow
  • Family trauma, emotional incest, parentification
  • Addiction and substance use — especially early
  • Identity, purpose, meaning
  • Hyperindependence, difficulty asking for help
  • Life transitions: HS → college → early career
Secondary — Strong fit
  • Parents of primary clients (30s–50s)
  • Mid-career professionals with family-of-origin surfacing
  • Existential or career crisis mid-30s
  • High-functioning people who feel they “should” have it together
  • Anyone for whom personality fit matters most
Not the right fit
  • Children under 16
  • Protocol-only treatment seekers (strict DBT only)
  • Insurance-dependent clients (self-pay only)
  • Those seeking primarily a diagnostic focus
If I'm not the right fit

I'd rather refer you to someone who's a better match than let you spend time and money in the wrong place. If I'm not the right fit, I'll tell you plainly on our consultation call and try to point you toward someone who might be.

Therapy works when the relationship is right. That's the whole premise.

“There is nothing wrong with you. You are a human being having a human experience. The biggest factor in a healing therapeutic experience is finding someone who sees you as an equal, not a project.”

— James Seabrook
